Hello. My name is Yuji Akechi. I’m the vice president the Myotonic Dystrophy Patients’ Group of Japan, called DM-family, and I’m going to give you a brief introduction to our group. My aim is to outline our group so that you can see what Japanese patients and group are doing.
First, I’d like to introduce myself. Then I’ll talk about our mission. And finally, I’ll talk about our recent activities.

So, let me start by introducing myself.
I have DM type1. When I was a graduate student, and while majoring in molecular biology, my brother was diagnosed with DM. I was worried if I also had DM. After careful thought, I took the genetic test, and I was diagnosed with DM, too.
At that time, I decided to be a doctor to cure many patients like my brother.
So I studied again, then I started to work in Matsuyama Shimin Hospital as a resident.
I would like to be a good neurologist who understands patients’ mind, because, I’m a patient myself.

Well, that was my story. Now I’ll move on to our group mission.
Our group, DM-family, was established in 2016. 10 people, including me, and all DM patients and families gathered for a meeting in Tokyo.
In the same year, specialists and researchers had many lectures on DM all over Japan. They said that many DM patients tend to stop going to the hospital, because they think DM is an incurable disease.
We thought many Japanese patients and families didn’t know that some therapeutic products are currently being developed, and what they can do about DM.
Not only that, they seemed not to want to know about disease themselves.
But if we learn the right way of living with DM, we can be happy and do what we can for others.
After the discussion, we decided on our mission.
To support the development of a DM cure.
To provide information and networking opportunities among DM patients and families.
To raise public awareness about myotonic dystrophy.

So, we’ve started our activities.
Firstly, we published a booklet for patients and families to understand DM and patient registration. This booklet is available on our patient table in English.

Secondly, we held a study session for congenital myotonic dystrophy patients and families in Tokyo, in July, 2017. More than 100 patients and families attended from all over Japan.

40 percent of the participants didn’t know about the patients’ registry, but after this session, almost all of them changed their mind to participate in the registry.

Thirdly, we held the session to hear a lecture, do stretching exercise and do networking in Kobe, in the same month. Not only for patients and their families, but also the general public attended to learn about DM, to enjoy the stretching and to talk with each other.
Additionally, in this picture, they watched me on TV.

Ehime broadcasting company picked me up in a documentary program. I talked about my story, about what DM is and about the patient registry on TV.

So, I hope you see that we are starting many activities.
Our members are more than 100 people. Although we are a very new group, we are accelerating our activities for many Japanese patients and families to learn to be good patients.
And we Japanese patients and families will be able to help all of you.

Thank you.
